Chachapoyas in short
Chachapoyas is the natural border that divides mountain from jungle, the habitants call it "ceja de selva" because it has Andean and woodland elements, archaeological centre because it has great quantity of historical remains, beside its natural beauty.
Chachapoyas is capital of Amazonas department. It was the region of the powerful and legendary Chachapoya kingdom, which were finally conquered by the Incas Empire in the XVth century.
One of the main attractions is the spectacular Kuelap Fortress, legacy of the powerful Chachapoya, which main characteristic is the structure based in narrow passages that avoid the entrance of the enemies. We could also visit a mysterious place called The Lake of the Mummies, where 280 mummies were found, and in the mountains we could appreciate the Karajia Sarcophagus, enormous constructions made of mud, of 2 mts height that watch carefully its domains.
Not only impressive historical vestiges, Chachapoyas city is also famous because of the typical dances during it spectacular festivities, specially in Jalca town, known as the centre of the jungle folklore, during the whole year there are several parties were we could appreciate a mixture of tribes rituals and Christian religious.
This is Chachapoyas, spell of jungle and the enchant of the mountain, the mystery of its legendary constructions hidden in the bushy vegetation.
