Due to two mudslides at Aguas Calientes, train to Machu Picchu is suspendedOn April 10th, two mudslides fell dawn nearby the little village of Aguas Calientes, in the area of the Machu Picchu. It destroyed seven houses and a section of the railroad, which links Cusco to the Machu Picchu citadel. The rail traffic towards the Inca's citadel has been suspended meanwhile the line is being cleaned up. About 900 tourists are held up in Aguas Calientes. They will be transferred by police helicopters to Ollantaytambo, where they may easily go back to Cusco, while the railway cleaning work will be achieved. The first mudslide occurred at 1:25 am, at the gates of Aguas Calientes, affecting two bridges nearby houses and the Amazónico café and restaurant. The second mudslide was recorded at 2:00 am at the 101rst km of the railway, in the area of Cedrobamba, bounded by the cities of Pampacahua and Aguas Calientes. Precipitations occurred downstream of the barrage of the Alccamayo river, which is a tributary of the Vilcanota river, and carried away huge rocs, which caused the above cited problems. The government will take the necessary actions on the Alccamayo river to avoid this type of disaster to happen again. Additionally, the damaged areas will be rebuilt. Author : Rodolfo Galvez |
